| September 2, 2001 | When I Saw Madonna |
An MPM exclusive. By Erik Aigner California | Ok so here is the long version of me seeing Madonna these past 2 days. Yesterday about an hour before I was planning to leave, I was bored so I checked the traffic report. Turned out there had been an accident and so that was good to know and I left early. Earlier in the day I made myself a special Madonna mix for the 2-hour drive to the show, of the songs I thought/hoped she would play, so I listened to that on the way up, and when the traffic was really slow I watched Madonna videos on DVD. Then I got to the show and I had a nice seat (bordering the floor). The people there were mostly women and half the dudes were gay guys in glitter cowboy hats. These two 30-year old chicks sit next to me, and they're talking, and I was trying to think of something to say to them, but the only thing I could think of was "is this your first time seeing the show," but I decided not to ask because they were older enough than me that I thought it might be a funny thing to say -- because the last show was eight years ago. Then these two chicks about my age sit next to me on the other side. One was a doctor and the other one was a lawyer. I thought that was funny, yeah so I chatted with them for a while. While we were waiting for the show they had some techno on that was pretty good actually and some lights that changed colors and stuff. Then the show started... When she first came out the crowd was roaring really really loud, it was sweet. There were lots of lights and big screens playing different images and stuff, like a club but much bigger and better. For each 3 or 4 songs they would change their costumes and the set, it was like watching videos live. She started the show playing songs that were not my favorites, but she played four songs which I like alot and have listened to a zillion times (three of them were on my special mix for the way up, and the fourth I wasn't expecting her to play). I could describe the different sets and themes and costumes and special effects and stuff but it's the type of thing that's cool to see but not as interesting to hear about. During one song I didn't care so much about, I went outside and had a smoke. There was this hispanic guy there who could hardly speak any english but I understood that he didn't have a ticket. I guess he was waiting for his girlfriend or something, but anyway considering he couldn't speak english we had a funny time trying to talk to each other. So then I went back to the show... the last song was Holiday and she played Music for encore, and when they played that they dropped tons of gold confetti from the ceiling, so the air was filled with it. That was cool. Then on the way out, I was waiting in my car in a line of cars to leave the stadium, and the line was going nowhere. I had my window open, and these two hot girls walk up and one of them is like "That was too short, right?" I was like "yeah yeah, want to see something cool?" and I showed them madonna videos. That was funny because after I got the DVD player in the car I was like "hmm yeah it'd be funny to impress chicks with this, huh?" Then they were like "so, you have that screen hooked up to your car stereo or something?" and then I pressed the button that makes the screen fold down and slide into the dash and they were like "woah." yeah that was funny. Now you *know* at that moment I was gonna say "need a ride?," but I was stuck in traffic that was going nowhere! Well, they took off and then this guy comes around telling me about some back exit for the stadium. I checked it out and he was right, so I saved myself about a half hour of sitting in the parking lot doing nothing. Then I drove home speeding and didn't get a ticket. Tonight I went back again. This time I listened to different songs because I knew what she played last night. I showed up at the stadium, parked somewhere convenient to the back exit, and went in. My seat tonight was not far from my old seat but it was much better. This time I was sitting in between two big guys, which is funny but it wasn't as bad as it sounds. The two on my left were drunk or not just drunk, but they were pretty funny. They were definitely more fun than the doctor and the lawyer from last night. Before the show started, one of them was telling me how he was calling all his friends on the cellphone to make them jealous. He was even on the cellphone sometimes during the show when the music was blasting! I thought that was pretty funny. Well anyway back to before the show. On my right was a guy and a girl. I overheard the guy talking on his cellphone to someone, some shit like "I love you, more than anyone else." So there went my worries that the girl and the guy were together. The guy got up for a while and I found out the girl was from around Santa Cruz. So we talked for a while and she was cool. So then the guy came back and the show started, and make-my-friends-jealous boy was still on his cellphone, yeah it was pretty funny watching him. Anyway I thought the show was going to be exactly the same because the dancing and props and so on were very choreographed, but actually she played a few different songs. Also last night I was a little dissappointed that she didn't talk to the crowd besides to say "thanks, good night" at the end. This time though, when I was coming back from a smoke (I was sitting so close my ears started to hurt), she had been talking to the crowd. I don't mind that I missed what she said, I just think it's cool that she was talking instead of just singing the whole time. Anyway so the last bit of what she was saying was "if I wanted to be an asshole, I'd fuck." That was funny. Then she played a song which the night before I either missed because of smoking or she just didn't play, and this was a song from the early 90's which I've listened to for years, and on the drive there I was thinking if she took requests, I'd probably request that one. So that was great to hear. I was looking straight at the stage since the beginning of the show, and then during a slow song I look around a bit and that girl switched places with the guy so she was standing right next to me. That was cool. Also the song that I noticed was different tonight was not as good as the one she played instead last night, so that made it even better that I went to both shows. Anyway the rest of the show was like last night, gold confetti etc, and on the way out the girl and I agreed to hang out in Santa Cruz so she gave me her email address (she's also a web programmer like me, but I checked out her website tonight and well, I wouldn't hire her...) so then I drove home speeding again and didn't get a ticket. That's the story! |
