“This book is shaping up to be a timeless classic . . . which is kind of sad.”
I Don’t Want to Blow You Up was created to counter terrifying messages being transmitted in the name of a “War on Terror.” We hoped to draw attention to the myriad people of different colors and cultures living peacefully and meaningfully.
And then a funny thing happened . . . this became known as a book about Muslims who are not terrorists. While we understand the origins of this perception, it falls for and reinforces the very stereotype we were trying to put to rest. Of the dozens of people represented throughout the story, there is only one person identified as Muslim. Let’s not assume we can always judge or define a person by how they look, their dress, or even their name. You might be surprised how far a little conversation can go in revealing the true nature of a human being.
